Back in 1989 the UMWA used civil disobedience to attract attention to the needs of the miners right here in Russell County Virginia. The union stressed that all actions of the strike had to remain peaceful, however, many miners still used violent methods during the strike.
From what we now understand, the proposed Moss 3 Landfill in Russell County Virginia, could very well be linked to what happened back in 1989, involving some of the same players, just under a different wolf skin. The Russell County Virginia Board of Supervisors need to thoroughly understand that we are PROUD of our Heritage that was created by our Great Great Grandfathers, Great Grand Fathers, Grandfathers, Fathers, Mothers, Brothers, Sisters, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins and Neighbors.
As well as how they came together once before to save their beloved Russell County Virginia. They knew the difference between right and wrong and so does their children. The strike gained the news media‘s attention. People came from all across the country to support the UMWA’s cause, and around 50,000 people went to southwestern Virginia during the course of the strike, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, (FBI) and the Virginia State Police. Some people/companies tried to give us a bad rap for standing side by side with each other refusing to surrender, but there is a reason our founding fathers started a new country! Fast forward to February 13th 2024, this is the average opinion on this issue, all wrapped up into one persons written words, that speaks for the masses!
The current and past bos should be ashamed of themselves. I’m a truck driver and have been for 14 years. I’ve lived in Russell County since the early 80s. I grew up in Swords Creek. The job growth in Russell County is stale. There’s absolutely no excuse as to why job growth shouldn’t be a top priority past or present.
It comes down to doing what’s best for our kids and grand kids and the future of RC. Guess what bos members, if you want a better Russell County, trash isn’t the answer. Deals could have been made to bring in good paying jobs. I’m not just talking about the restaurants or shopping centers. Most factory jobs pay 16 plus an hour.
They sure can’t give the excuse of location, because the truck traffic is there. I could name 15 plus trucking companies in the surrounding area that would have been delighted to pull freight out. I’ve seen Honaker lose job after job and Lebanon hasn’t had real growth in years.
Castlewood and Cleveland could have reaped the rewards. Instead a landfill won’t even come close to what could have been. Yeah, they might hire a construction company, probably someone they know. We should have a County our kids and grand-kids doesn’t have to leave because of low to no job growth. Every bos member should be held accountable. I support no landfill 100% – Jimmie Fields.
