From what we understand, this has been in the works since around 2018. This information was leaked to the public on or about September 19th of 2023. The Russell County Board of Supervisors as well as the County Administrators office have been very slow to provide us the information we have asked for using VFOIA.
From what we have been told by Russell County, the answer is no. When this information was leaked to the public in October 2023 concerning the Moss 3 Landfill project, it is one of the first things we checked through online record searches. Now that we are aware of this issue, we will pay very close attention to the permitting process from this point forward. Virginia Code § 10.1-1408.1. Permit required; open dumps prohibited.
There are three things you can do to help us try and stop this landfill. The first way to help is make sure you talk to your family, Church groups, friends and neighbors about this landfill and see how they feel. If they are opposed then they need to let our elected officials know!
The second thing you can do is attend the Russell County Virginia Board of Supervisors monthly meetings and let them know how you feel in person. They recently changed the meeting day and time to the first Saturday of each month at 9am.
We meet at the Russell County Conference Center in Lebanon. If you need a ride, just let us know and we will be happy to get you there and back in a very safe and polite manner.
The third thing you can do is print out our flyer or ask us for some and keep them in your car and pass them out at every opportunity you get. You will be amazed when you notice how unaware people are about what is going on around them and their family, and more importantly, how grateful they are for letting them know.
You can watch their facial expressions change in real time when they finally understand what is happening at this very second, and how they also have no desire to see this Moss 3 Landfill come into Russell County Virginia!
You can hand these out at Church, Walmart, while you are sitting at the Post Office or Events you may attend. It's real simply to do. "Hey Neighbor, you hear about this mega dump Russell County is try to get over at Moss 3 in Cleveland?". If they say no hand them a flyer.
If they say yes, ask them if they need some flyers to hand out! We can help save Russell County for future generations if we all come together!
