UMWA Calls for Community Action Against Proposed Moss 3 Landfill
[RUSSELL COUNTY, VA] The United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) invites all residents
of Russell County and supporters in the area to participate in a crucial community gathering at
the Russell County Board of Supervisor meeting on March 8, 2024 at 7:00 p.m.
The Board will discuss the “Landfill Host Agreement Resolution,” particularly focusing on the
proposed Moss 3 Landfill site in Russell County. The UMWA firmly opposes the consideration
of a landfill on this site of national historic value, believing it to be not only disrespectful to the
UMWA’s legacy but a travesty against the community members whose support was so critical
during the strike.
“A landfill at the Moss 3 site would be a slap in the face to the thousands from Russell County
and elsewhere who participated in the UMWA’s historic strike at Pittston Coal. We call upon
every member of our community to say NO to this egregious proposal. Join us in preserving the
sanctity of our history and the legacy of those who fight tirelessly for workers’ rights," said
UMWA International President Cecil E. Roberts.
